We’re Going on a Road Trip!

November 3, 2007 - Leave a Response

This November, students from SCES presented at the Student Showcase portion of the Georgia Education Technology Conference. Fourth grade students demonstrated how they work as a group to plan a family vacation to a popular attraction. Students calculate a total trip cost by researching and estimating the cost of fuel, tickets, meals, and lodging. Students will show how they create PowerPoints to sell their vacation package to their classmates. This student-focused e-Math unit includes student reflections, bar graphs, pie graphs, internet resources, calculator activities, and the use of Activ-Studio software. These students exemplified how technology is integrated while learning Georgia Performance Standards. Click here to access to the presentation materials.

During the summer of 2007, four SCES teachers traveled to NECC in Atlanta. We presented a “Model-Classroom” lesson to an audience of more than 150! During the presentation, 20 lucky participants played the role of student and completed activities from our third grade bird house unit. Click here to access to the presentation materials. We also made a blog for our NECC presentation!

e-Math Units

SCES is an e-Math school.  In the Fall of 2004, SCES was awarded the Title-II D e-Math grant from the Federal Government.  As part of grant requirements, teachers in grades three, four, and fifth wrote units that they would implement in their classrooms.  Click here to access our e-Math units.  E-Math teachers use a blog to document meetings and share ideas.

Tech Lab

November 3, 2007 - Leave a Response

SCES has been blessed to have a Technology Lab for over 12 years! Students in third, fourth and fifth grades come to Tech Lab two weeks in the fall and two weeks in the spring. Students work in groups of four and rotate through seven stations to complete activities. During their fall visit, students in third grade learn about magnets, fourth graders complete an e-Math unit, and fifth graders learn about electricity. When they come in the spring, each station introduces students to various technology resources. Students learn how to create graphs on-line, use Photostory, Google SketchUp, Google Earth, Celestia, Picasa. Students also learn how to use equipment that they have in their classrooms, such as, video cameras and digital cameras. There are two Tech Lab blogs that are used in the lab, one for the fall activities and one for the spring activities.
